How Do Registry Cleaners Work?
After many things being said all over the web about them, many might still wonder how do registry cleaners really do their work.
To have a greater understanding on how a registry cleaner works, it would be of some help to tackle an overview of the basic anatomy of a Windows registry. For starters, a Windows registry is a vital component of the operating system which comes in the form of a database. What are stored in this database are the configuration settings and information for the computer hardware as well as the software that are installed on it. When you install a new software, i.e., MS Office, Norton Anti-Virus, Nero, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, your best online photo management software and etc., the installation software that is packaged with these applications will place some pieces of code into the registry to guide the Windows operating system as to the location of the associated files on the hard drive, how the applications would be integrated into the desktop, how they are configured to run, what the user settings are, or how the applications would interface with the computer’s hardware and peripheral devices.
Keys and Values
The Windows registry is composed of two fundamental elements which are:
1) Key
2) Value
To understand better what these two are, we may have to give due reference to the structure of files and folders in the Windows operating system.
The structure of the Key is much like as in a file folder. It looks like the folder you see when you open the file manager utility in Windows. As such, the Key may contain files or other sub-keys in it. The Value is the one that actually contains data or information to be used by the operating system. As such, the Value contained within a Key is much like in structure with a file which is contained in a folder. Sounds too technical? Just remember this: Folders = Keys and Files = Values. It is that simple really.
Now what registry cleaners then do is just so simple. They scan the Keys and Values for any invalid, redundant, or corrupted data which may impair the efficient operation of your computer and then remove those. One may ask, why would there be an invalid or corrupted data in the registry when I do not even know how to access it? You may not, but the installers and uninstallers of the software such as a typical touch tablet software which you may have installed in your
system do. Not only that, viruses, malwares, spywares, Trojans, worms, and other malicious software designed to corrupt the registry may find their way past the anti-viruses and into the registry itself. In addition, there are many software uninstallers which do not completely delete the Keys and Values associated with the software application which you might have uninstalled. These are just the most common factors which lead to a fragmented, corrupted and cluttered registry and thus the need to have them cleaned manually or, as preferred by many, to clean them using free or paid registry cleaners.
What we have just tackled is an overview of the Windows registry and how the registry cleaners do their thing. Hopefully, you just had a basic understanding of the concepts behind their primary function.

An Overview On Registry Cleaners
In this technologically evolving planet and increasing population, computer users are increasing by the numbers each day. If you are a computer user which happened to encounter the terms: registry cleaner, registry fix, registry cleanup or Windows registry fix and wondered what these terms really mean, then you might want to continue reading on.
Background
Registry cleaners are actually software utility tools for the PC based computers which are using the Windows operating system. They have been around since the Windows operating system was created by Microsoft – an immensely successful software company best known for its various high-end software application such as the MS Office and other well-known software packages. It is no doubt that every computer user is already familiar with the name Microsoft Windows. One of the basic and most important framework which guides the Windows operations is its registry. This is basically a database which stores a wide variety of information and instructions for the operating system to use such as hardware configuration settings, user preference, and installation settings for various applications that you might want to use such as computer games, burning software, church software, CADs and many others. To put it in a simple and non-technical term, Windows cannot function without its registry. Since this is a very complex database, it should not be tampered with nor tinkered with unless one is highly qualified to do so or knows exactly what he or she is doing. Any slight mistake can corrupt the entries in the registry and make the system unstable leading to system crashes, failures, or in worst case scenarios – data loss.
Purpose
These software utilities were created simply for cleaning the registry. One may ask,
why will the registry need cleaning? Here’s why…as one’s computer is being used over time, the registry could become somewhat fragmented or polluted with so many useless and redundant codes or data. This may be the result of software uninstallers not doing the job they are supposed to do. In quite many cases, software uninstallers are not very efficient at deleting the registry entries associated with the software application being removed along with it. In some cases, window pop-ups or error messages are displayed as a result of such. Another cause is through the infection of viruses, worms, spywares, trojans and other malicious scripts which may have found their way past the anti-virus software installed in the computer.
Pros and Cons
Many computer experts have varying opinions regarding the use of this software utility. Some experts highly recommend its usage and even consider it as a handy tool to keep the computer tuned up and running in good shape all the time. On the contrary, many experts also dissuade its use due to some allegedly potential harm that it may bring to the registry. Some experts also give due caution and advised against using some free registry cleaner which are widely available for download in many websites. Some experts also opined that these software utilities are not needed considering that they allegedly do not bring any noticeable improvement on a computer’s performance or speed. However, as cited by other group of experts, there are benefits which can be gained through the use of these cleaners. The most common benefit being cited, especially by vendors and software companies that manufacture them, is that these improve the speed and performance of computers as a result of a clean registry. Computer start up times are said to be faster with a clean and uncluttered registry. But according to some experts, the real benefit of using these utility tools is in its automated removal of unneeded or invalid registry entries. The best registry cleaners available
today can mostly do the job as expected without any glitch. A registry is one huge database composed of thousands of entries and sifting through it cannot be done easily or efficiently by a human.
With varied opinions and recommendations by experts nowadays, it is quite difficult to finally decide whether to go on ahead using these tools or not. But nonetheless, every user has their own respective preferences or choices and it would be up to them to go ahead and use these tools or not. One good starting point is to search and evaluate the various registry cleaner reviews online. There are many credible online sources of reviews which can aid in arriving at a well informed decision on which one to use or whether to use them at all or not.
